In 1950, a local Magnolian art teacher, Ms. Marjorie Chamberlain wanted the community to be more aware of the art around them. She began the Sidewalk Art Show to give young people an opportunity to show their work. The Art Show was held around the Columbia County Courthouse lawn beneath the beautiful Magnolia trees. Ms. Chamberlain's father built easels for the adults and strung wire from tree totree for her student’s art work to be held with cloths pins. After 67 years, the tradition still lives, with a few updates, but the charm and dream of one women is still here.
Today the Sidewalk Art Show has been renamed Magnolia Arts Annual Art Show and is held every third Saturday in May in the Magnolia Arts Center building accompanied by the Magnolia Blossom Festival and the World Championship Steak Cook off, with thousands attending the event each year.
The prizes for the individual youth will include the Marjorie Chamberlain Best of Show of $25 for each grade level 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th and 7th - 9th, Lynette Estes Best of Show of $25 10th -12th and Dirk Williams Best in Show Sculpture Award of $25 10th - 12th. Individual adult prizes will include Bobo Shinn "Grand" Prize of $1,000.00 and Magnolia Arts Best in Show of $250. Both Adult and Youth level offering cash prizes in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention in 7 categories; Painting, Drawing, Mixed Media, Photography, Digital, Ceramics, and 3D/Functional Art. Grand total winnings of $4, 305.00
In addition to our amazing art and many prizes we also host the Artmobile, Tommy Terrific's Wacky Magic Show and the Magnolia Arts Steak Dinner Fundraiser
The Artmobile has been serving the state for over 50 years and is one of the nation’s very few mobile art museums. This unique gallery space features themed exhibitions of works from the Arkansas Arts Center’s permanent collection. Works are carefully selected for their artistic integrity and educational value. The Artmobile is a perfect source of arts exposure for schools, libraries, festivals, and more!
